
Keeping a Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
When you’re running a Class 100 environment, “almost clean” doesn’t cut it. You can’t have things flaking off or shedding particles into your workspace. The problem is that most standard heaters are a nightmare in these settings—they tend to outgas or literally peel apart as they heat up and cool down. We fixed that. We took high-purity quartz IR lamps and tucked them into precision-made stainless steel housings. Simple, but it works.
Why we stick with Pure Quartz
We use synthetic quartz for the heating tubes. Most glass just can’t handle the heat without breaking down or releasing those nasty volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Quartz is different. It gives the infrared radiation a clear shot at your workpiece. Since the heat travels directly, you don’t need any conductive materials in the way—which means one less place for dust to hide.
The nitty-gritty on the housing
Most contamination starts with the housing, so we spent a lot of time getting this right. We use 316L stainless steel and polish it to a mirror finish. Why? Because microscopic pits are basically hotels for particles. We also ditched traditional welding wherever we could. Instead, we use precision bends and orbital welding. No slag, no splatter, no messy leftovers inside the chamber. And a quick tip: keep an eye on your airflow. We kept the footprint tight to stop air turbulence. If the air stays smooth, you won’t kick up particles into your production zone.
The trade-off: Heat vs. Cooling
Here’s the thing: these lamps are intense. They deliver a ton of localized heat, which is great for your cycle times, but it’s a lot for your cooling system to swallow. If your exhaust isn’t beefy enough to handle the heat soak, you’re looking at warped housings or a cleanroom alarm going off at 3 AM. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday. To keep things safe, we use high-temp PTFE cabling so the insulation doesn’t melt. As long as your power supply matches the voltage and wattage, it’s a straightforward drop-in replacement for your existing rack. No flakes. No fumes. Just raw IR energy.
