
Keeping Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got constant steam and splashing water, and as we all know, water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. One bad seal and you’re looking at a short circuit or a tripped breaker. Here is how we actually handle the insulation to keep things safe. The Housing You can’t just throw these in a cheap plastic box and hope for the best. We use high-grade dielectric materials for the lamp holders and the outer shell. Basically, this stops the current from jumping from the live parts to the frame. We also make sure the housing hits an IPX4 rating or better. Why? Because it keeps the drips from landing right on the electrical contacts. If that seal fails, your GFCI is going to trip immediately—which is a great safety net, but a pain to reset. The Connections Most of the time, things go wrong at the connection points. That’s where the moisture sneaks in. To stop that, we skip the open-terminal blocks entirely. Instead, we use sealed connectors that lock tight, or we wrap the wiring in adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing. Some of the time, we even use potted epoxy resin to completely encase the terminations. It stops “creepage,” which is just a fancy way of saying it prevents moisture from slowly carving a conductive path across the insulator over time. Grounding and the Heat Trade-off Every single metal part of the heater is bonded to a dedicated ground wire. It’s simple: if a wire burns out or a seal gives way, the current goes straight into the ground instead of through whoever is standing in the shower. But here’s the tricky part. When you seal a unit tight to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. It’s a trade-off. Because there’s less airflow, the internal wiring gets a lot hotter. To deal with that, we use thicker wire gauges and silicone insulation. Silicone is the way to go here—it won’t crack or degrade after a thousand cycles of heating up and cooling down in a humid bathroom.
