Getting them connected If you want that “instant spring” feeling from your phone, you just need to bridge the power to your smart home hub. A simple dry-contact relay or a Zigbee/Matter switch does the trick. Here’s how it works: you tap a button in your app, the signal hits the relay, the circuit closes, and boom—you’re warm. No waiting around for a room to heat up. The nitty-gritty stuff To keep the moisture out, we used sealed gaskets and coated connectors. Inside, there’s a high-wattage quartz element. It’s small, but it packs a punch. But here is the catch. Because they put out so much heat in such a small space, they pull a lot of power. If you’re planning to put a few of these on one smart circuit, double-check your breakers and wire gauge. You don’t want to be sitting in the dark because you tripped a breaker during a cold snap. Real-world tips These are great for swapping out those clunky old manual heaters on your patio, in the bathroom, or in the workshop. Once they’re tied into a hub, you can get creative. Set them to kick in when a sensor sees you walk into the room or when the temperature drops below a certain point. One big warning:Please don’t use cheap, low-amp smart plugs. Infrared elements pull a heavy, continuous load. Cheap plugs will literally melt. Stick with an industrial-grade 16A relay. It’s a bit more effort upfront, but it keeps everything stable and, more importantly, safe.
