
Why we obsess over dielectric testing for quartz shields
Think of the quartz glass shield in your fabrication lamp as the only thing standing between a high-voltage heating element and the rest of your machine. Sure, it handles the heat and lets the light through, but its real job is to keep the electricity where it belongs. If that shield fails? You’re looking at a short circuit that could fry your control boards in a heartbeat—or worse, turn the machine chassis into a grounding hazard for whoever is standing next to it.That’s a bad day at the office.
We test every single one. No exceptions.
Some shops do “sample checks.” They test one out of every ten lamps and hope for the best. We don’t do that. Every single lamp that leaves our floor goes through a full voltage withstand and insulation test. We basically stress-test the quartz and the sealants with high voltage to make sure nothing is leaking. Why? Because of “arcing.” In a high-wattage setup, electricity is always looking for the easiest path to ground. A tiny, microscopic crack or even a bit of leftover grime on the glass can act like a bridge, letting current jump from the lamp straight to the metal frame. We build these shields to handle surges way beyond what you’ll actually use, just to give you some breathing room.
The balancing act
Here’s the thing about high-purity quartz: it’s a fantastic insulator, but it’s brittle. While we push the electrical strength as high as possible, we have to keep a close eye on the physical side of things. You’ve got a safe, isolated system, but you can’t treat these shields like they’re made of steel. If you mount them too tight or bump them too hard, you’ll get stress fractures. You might not even see these cracks with the naked eye, but our insulation tests will catch them every time. One quick tip: if your environment has a lot of vibration, give your mounting brackets some wiggle room. If you bolt them down too rigidly, the glass will eventually snap, no matter how great the electrical insulation is.Give it some space to breathe.
