Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom is a bit of a balancing act. You’ve got high-voltage electricity sitting right next to steam, splashes, and the occasional stray drop of water. If you don’t get the engineering right, you’re asking for trouble. When we build these, we focus on two big risks: water getting where it shouldn’t and the heating tubes cracking.
The deal with IP44
You’ll see “IP44” on the spec sheet. In plain English? It means the housing is tight enough to keep out small bits of debris and can handle water splashing at it from any angle. Here’s the thing: steam is sneaky. It finds its way into standard housings, which leads to rusty terminals or a short circuit. We use heavy-duty gaskets and special cable glands to keep the internals bone-dry. Some people try to cut costs by using a lower rating. Don’t do that. It’s a shortcut that leads to tripped breakers or, in a worst-case scenario, a chassis that’s live with electricity. Not a great way to start your morning.
Why we use explosion-proof quartz
Imagine a scorching hot quartz tube. Now imagine a single cold drop of water hitting it. That sudden temperature shock can make standard glass shatter. To stop that, we use explosion-proof quartz. It’s designed to handle those wild temperature swings without giving up. When we say “explosion-proof,” we really mean the glass is tough enough to hold in the halogen gas and resist breaking into pieces under stress. We usually add a protective mesh or a sleeve over the top, too. That way, even if a tube fails, you aren’t dealing with shards of glass falling in the shower.
The trade-offs
High-wattage lamps get you warm instantly, but they pull a lot of power. You’ll need to make sure your wiring is thick enough to handle the load, otherwise you’ll deal with voltage drops. Also, this tougher glass can slightly change how the infrared heat is emitted compared to the thin stuff they use in labs. But honestly? In a home bathroom, you’ll never notice the difference. The peace of mind is worth it. Just make sure you use a dedicated, moisture-resistant circuit and ground those mounting brackets. It’s that last little bit of effort that keeps the high-voltage stuff safely away from the people using it.
