
Getting the Light Right in Bathroom IR Heaters
When we’re building infrared lamps for bathrooms, the biggest headache isn’t actually the heat. It’s the light. Standard short-wave lamps can be blinding. It’s a harsh, stabbing glare that nobody wants in their eyes first thing in the morning. It’s even worse for babies, since their eyes are way more sensitive than ours. Not a great way to start the day.
Dealing with the Glare
So, how do we stop the blinding light without losing the warmth? We use special coatings on the quartz glass. Think of it as a filter. It kicks out the UV rays and that annoying high-frequency light, but lets the cozy infrared heat slide right through. You feel the warmth on your skin, but the light stays soft and mellow. No retinal stress, no squinting. We keep the brightness levels low enough that you can actually look at the fixture without needing sunglasses.
The Balancing Act
Designing these things is always a bit of a trade-off. If you crank up the wattage, you get heat faster. Sounds great, right? But there’s a catch. Higher wattage makes the reflector get scorching hot. If you try to cram too much power into a small plastic box, the housing is just going to warp. It’s a mess. If you’re pushing over 250W per lamp, just go with aluminum heat sinks. It keeps the outside of the unit cool to the touch, which is exactly where you want it.
A Few Tips on Installation
Where you put the heater matters. Leave some breathing room between the lamp and the ceiling. If you mount it too tight, the heat gets trapped. That creates a “hot spot” that can peel your ceiling paint or, worse, set off the smoke alarm. And please, do yourself a favor: use high-temp leads. Standard PVC wiring just can’t handle the constant heating and cooling of a bathroom. Use silicone-insulated wire instead. It won’t melt down when things get hot.
