
Cutting Carbon in the Fab: Why IR Heating Actually Works
Every fab is feeling the heat right now to hit those carbon neutrality goals. It’s a lot of pressure. A huge part of the problem is just wasted energy—specifically during wafer heating and curing. Most of us are still clinging to legacy resistive heaters, but the truth is, they’re inefficient. We’ve been moving people over to short-wave infrared (IR) lamps because they do things differently. Instead of heating up all the air in the room, they go straight for the target. The logic is pretty simple. Standard convection heaters are like trying to warm up a whole house just to heat one cup of coffee. It’s a waste. Our IR systems use direct radiation. The energy jumps from the filament to the wafer surface almost instantly. It’s fast. Really fast. Because the ramp-up time is so short, you end up pulling way fewer kilowatt-hours per wafer. Plus, since you aren’t turning your chamber into an oven, your HVAC and cooling water systems don’t have to work nearly as hard. Now, let’s talk about the technical side. We build these lamps with high watt density. Short-wave IR penetrates deeper into the wafer material, which is a big win because you can often get the same result while running lower temperatures. But here is the catch: watch your power supply. These lamps pull a massive amount of current the second they kick on. If your power rails aren’t ready for that initial surge, you’re going to be tripping breakers all day. Just make sure your electricals can handle the spike before you flip the switch. Getting them into your line We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You don’t need to rebuild your whole array. We use quartz envelopes so the lamps don’t warp under the heat, and the connectors are all standardized. It makes swapping them out a breeze. But I’ll be honest with you—there is a trade-off. Unlike a heating element that you can basically ignore for years, IR lamps have a shelf life. They will burn out. Eventually. You can’t just “set it and forget it.” You need a real schedule for replacements. If a lamp starts to dim, your wafer temperature dips, and your yield will absolutely tank. My advice? Keep a box of spares right there on the floor. It’s much better to have them and not need them than to have your whole line go dark while you wait for a shipment.
